Kevin is a 6th grade math teacher with a love for books, gaming, and full of great ideas.
His most recent post happened to be from today, and I absolutely loved it. He told his students to write a short, narrative story. That's all. Not further instructions, grading scale or rubric. He simply asked his 6th graders to write a story; and many of them couldn't. They wanted a prompt or guidelines. Kevin reflected on the resistance to an open ended creative activity. One of my favorite quotes is shown below.
how do we best help our young people see the rich possibilities in the blank slate before them if we don’t give them more opportunities, more freedom, more chances to explore their ideas on the page?
Many of his posts have a large amount of insight and intrigue. He writes in a way that engages the reader. I loved how he linked a situation in his classroom to a broader education topic. This makes his argument more credible and interesting.
I have already saved his blog to my bookmarks. I will definitely use his blog as a resource for teaching.
